Week 8 -- Theme -- Vignettes

The Island

The trip to the island for the day has become a popular event. Every year different people show up to go. It has  grown to the point where we have to take two boats now. Boats tied to the dock. People coming and going, up and down the ramp lugging lawn chairs, coolers, blankets, grills, beach toys and god only knows what else. Guys taking stuff from the dock and loading it onto the boats. Kids running around, laughing and playing. Ya hear, "Where is Joe?" "Get out of the way." "Be careful, ya don't fall in the wata." Eventually all of talking, laughing and sounds of the boat run in together.

Last but not least board on two or three dogs. Boats are loaded and as usual have to wait for someone. Either running late, in the bathroom or something. "Sorry,  for me I Everyone trying to find a place to sit for the journey over to the pier so we can load up with ice and who and whatever else might be there.Seagulls flying around and being rather noisy. The sounds of the waves splashing against the boat as it moves swiftly through the water. Chatter and laughter coming from the people on the boat. Oh, what glorious sounds these are.

Water splashing into the boat as the other boat goes zipping by. "Awe, got me wet ya here." "Whew, was that cold." Lobster trap bouys, reds, blues, yellows, blacks, oh many colors bobbing on the water, as we are making our way through them. The boat slowing down, "Look to the right, see all of the seals on the rocks sunning themselves. The noise of the boat and the people didn't seem to bother them much. A few of them moved about and splashed into the water, like they were playing.

The boat gets as close to shore as possible, drops anchor. Pulling up the other little boat with a small outboard motor that had been being towed behind. Everyone trying to get stuff from the big boat to the little boat to be taken to shore. One trip, two trips, three trips, "Holy Shit, how much stuff did we bring anyway." you hear. Dogs barking, kids running and laughing, Adults discussing "Okay where are we going to set this up?" " Where is that?" "Time for a drink."

The tide keeps going out further and further. Now everyone is off on different ventures. As the tide has gone out and left sandbars which you can walk across to a couple of different islands. The girls having fun, laughing and taking pictures. Men and boys are playing horseshoes. Kids playing in the cold, cold water of the ocean. Lawn chairs, beach towels, toys, grills, tables and food everywhere. Oh what a beautiful sight.

Oh nice! Picture after picture, scene after scene, vignettes galore--and this one reads as if from strong memory, not as if from ideas as I said in the faces piece. You really have the idea of what a vignette can do and what it looks like and you execute them beautifully here.
